Electronic shifting used to feel like a solution in search of a problem for gravel riding specifically — a genuine luxury for road racing, but an added failure point for the kind of riding where your drivetrain is caked in mud, frozen solid, or both within the same ride. GRX Di2 changed our minds on that within the first proper winter of testing. It shifts exactly the same whether the derailleur is clean and dry or packed with half-frozen mud, and that consistency turns out to matter more than we expected.
The ergonomics are what stand out first, before you even get to the electronics. The hood shape is genuinely designed for rough terrain and gloved hands rather than adapted from a road groupset, with a wider platform and better leverage when you’re braking hard into a loose corner standing up. The shift logic — how the system decides what to do with a sequential shift button press — never leaves you second-guessing which direction you’re about to shift, which sounds trivial until you’ve used a system that does the opposite.
Battery life across a full multi-day tour is close to a non-issue in practice. Shimano’s quoted range is generous, but even accounting for real-world conditions and cold-weather battery drain, we’ve completed week-long unsupported trips without needing to think about charging, which removes one more thing to manage when you’re already juggling navigation, food and weather.
It is a genuine financial investment relative to a comparable mechanical GRX groupset, and a well-maintained cable-actuated setup will get you everywhere this will for meaningfully less money — mechanical shifting is not a lesser choice, just a different one. Wiring the system also adds real setup time and complexity versus routing a cable, which matters if you’re building your own bike or doing your own maintenance on the road.
Where this earns its price is specifically in the conditions where mechanical shifting starts to degrade — deep cold, thick mud, a cable stretched and gritty after days of bad weather. Once you’ve ridden a frozen morning where every single shift still lands cleanly regardless, it’s a difficult thing to go back from. For riders doing occasional fair-weather trips, that difference may never come up.
