The Ice Cream Loop

Proof that the best excuse for 200km in the saddle is a scoop at the far end — a long Halland loop built entirely around dessert.

Every good cycling community has at least one route that exists purely because someone decided a destination needed to involve ice cream, and this is that route for the Varberg crowd. It's a proper day out regardless of the premise — close to 200km and 1,600 metres of climbing through the Halland countryside, farmland and forest roads linking small towns that most riders would otherwise have no reason to pass through. The best rides don't always need a serious purpose. Sometimes the purpose is a cone at the halfway point and the ride home to earn it back. The ice cream stop itself sits roughly at the halfway point, in one of the small towns the route otherwise has no reason to pass through — check opening hours before you go, since a shut door at kilometre ninety-eight is a genuine morale problem. Surface is entirely paved, which keeps the pace brisk and makes this a good route for road bikes or gravel bikes on slicks rather than anything technical. Best ridden April through October, and best ridden with company — this is a route built for a group, not a solo effort.
