The island unrolls flat and wide beneath your wheels, ocean visible on one side or the other for almost every kilometre of this loop. Starting from the old cement docks of Degerhamn, the route threads past the whitewashed sweep of Long Jan lighthouse, the Iron Age ruins of Eketorp, and a 17th-century wall built to keep the king's deer in — not cyclists out. Fishing harbours interrupt the ride at just the right moments, smoke curling from smokehouses selling the day's catch. This is Öland at its most elemental: wind, limestone, and the endless line where grass meets sea.
